General PolicyDSC01160

As all ICDF students must reside in student dormitories, according to the Scope of Scholarship, campus dorms will be reserved for you and dorm fees will be covered up to a certain amount by scholarship. If students decide to stay off campus dormitory (including International House) for any reason or no reason, he or she should sign “Assumption of Responsibility” (click and download) and bear full responsibility for any accident or result. The scholarship will not pay any money for off-campus stay and NCCU will not reserve a dorm room for those who stay off campus either.

Dorm deposit NT$1,000 will be borne by students. You’re required to pay at school cashier each time before moving to a new room and will get a full refund after moving out.

Your dorm fee will be paid along with your tuition fee by your project manager for three terms -Fall (Sept.1-Jan.31), Spring (Feb.1-June. 30), Summer (July 1-Aug. 31).

According to campus dorm regulation, the maximum period a graduate student is allowed to stay is four semesters (including two winter vacations and one summer vacation) plus an extending summer term in your legitimate graduate year. Scholarship will subsidize your dorm fee until you depart for home or the last day of your legitimate stay.

For both males and females, dorm fee will be covered up to a two-bed room in ZihCiang Dorm No.10 (自強10舍)(for master degree students) in your first and second year.

If you want to upgrade your room (e.g. a single room in Dorm No.10), please visit Student Housing Service Section on the 3rd floor of Administration Building, check the availability and fill out the application. If a suitable room is available, a bill of fee difference (between the subsidy and the preferred room charge) will be issued which you can pay at school cashier (5th floor of administration building).

Extension of stay

“Notice for Applying to Continue Residing in a Dormitory” will be sent to defaulted email box (I hope you’ve done auto-transfer setting to receive important email notices) around early May (for applying to extend stay through summer vacation) and around early June (for applying to extend stay through fall semester of the second year). The notice will guide you through the procedure to successfully complete your online application. Please note while Student Housing Service Section might confirm the status of your registration with project manager who would do cross-checking or trouble shooting for you, it’s student’s full responsibility to make sure he/she receives the notice, completes online registration before the deadline and contacts Student Housing Service Section or project manager for any problem as soon as possible.

For  students wishing to switch to a single room in the second year, when you complete the online application to continue your stay in the dorms, make sure to check “yes” to request transfer to a single room in ZihCiang Residence Hall. Your name will be then be placed in the computer-generated lottery. Announcement of the waiting list will be mailed to applicants and posted on the bulletin board of the Student Housing Service Section website.

Summer Dorm Stay

If you plan to stay at dorm over summer, the scholarship will subsidize it under the following conditions:

  1. You shall reside in the dorm for at least 1 month long during summer term (July 1-Aug.30). Please note, summer dorm is charged in two-month time, no matter how long you stay there.
  2. First years will have priority over second years if the scholarship budget is constrained and not able to support all students who apply to stay during summer.

Living at Dorm

For many students, staying at dorm might be one of most stressful aspects of studying at NCCU. Below we have two fellow students sharing their personal experiences and approaches to help you adapt to the dorm life better.

Eduardo Rivera

Before coming to your new life here at NCCU, here are some facts about the dorms. In this case, I will be referring to the male dorms. On your 1st year you will be provided with a double room, in which your roommate will be another ICDF student (most likely). You will share a bathroom with him plus people from another room. In total 4 people sharing one bathroom. It may sound like troublesome or whatever, but “communication” & “adaptation” is key. I guarantee you will get used to it very quickly. The dorms are small. You will have a desk, a cabinet, A/C, drawers, a closet and a bed. That’s it. No mattress is provided, you will have to purchase one upon your arrival (we will go with you, so don’t worry). The rooms are white (painted over a year ago, so they look neat). Bathrooms, it is your responsibility to keep them clean.

Some everyday hacks that might be helpful for you here at the dorms are:

Food: since there is only 1 refrigerator for the entire male dorms (3 buildings) and it’s always full, you may buy powdered milk, cereal, oats, bread, peanut butter, eggs (you can cook them in the microwave – there is 1 per floor), tuna and other canned foods. You will find your personal style as days go by. You can actually save money if you have food at your dorms. We’ll tell you more about it upon your arrival. This also applies for the ladies.

Transportation: basically, you have three options to get to campus (the dorms are within campus), including walking, school bus and bicycle.

Walking: it’ll take between 10-15 min from the dorms to campus.

School’s bus: they come approximately every 20 min and charge a very small fee ($1 NTD).

Bicycle: fastest way, but you have to buy a bike. You may find them near campus at reasonable prices starting from $1200 NTD.

If you do not want to share a room, you may apply for a single room (you will still share a bathroom). But you have to cover the additional charge. Please read the info that the Housing Service Unit will be sending to you for further information.

That’s it. Open your mind to a whole new experience that is totally worth it.

eduardo_riveraHi, welcome to the NCCU- IMBA ICDF Family!
Living in Taiwan will be a whole new experience for you. At the beginning, it could be frustrating not understanding what people in the streets, MRT, buses, etc. are talking about. Maybe for you, the food will be a big issue as it was for me. But you get used to it, to everything, believe me.

And Dorm 9 will be part of this experience. The first thing that you have to understand is that you’re not living at home anymore. You have to share your room, your bathroom, your shower, everything! That being said, let’s start with facts and tips.

Tip No. 1: Try to build a good relationship with your roommate
Your roommate will be the person with whom you will probably spend the most of your day. It is really great if you can become a good friend with your roommate, but if that’s not possible, at least have a good relationship with her. Start by setting some basic rules: i.e. cleaning schedule, until what time the other can stay up inside the room, knocking the door before entering the room, etc. I don’t know, the sky is the limit, it will all depend on you, your habits and what you like and dislike. If there’s an attitude about your roommate that you don’t like or that makes you feel uncomfortable, find a good way of telling her. If you are really mad about something, wait until you calm down and then talk to her. Maybe she doesn’t know that that bothers you. Bonus: If you do become friends with your roommate you have many movie nights ahead, someone to take care of you when you’re sick and a shoulder to cry on when you’re missing your loved ones.

Tip No. 2: Use the fridge on the first floor
Yes I know, just 1 fridge for the whole building, that’s crazy! But it does help you to save some money and keep stuff that you like such as ham, cheese and milk. However, it is better if you buy a plastic container to put your food inside. The container will never be in the place you left it, but at least all your stuff will be together. Also remember to change the dates on the container according to the rules, otherwise, your food will be thrown away on the cleaning day. There are papers, pen and tape on the desk next to the fridge for you to label all your food. Warning: Some girls put things such as opened cans and juices on the fridge, so your things will get sticky. Sometimes wrapping your container in a plastic bag is better. Also beware of people stealing your food

Tip No. 3: Set an alarm whenever you’re washing/drying your clothes
There is one washing machine and one drying machine per hall. In each hall live about 24 girls. That’s a big demand for the machines. If you put your clothes on the machine and forget about them, someone will come, get your clothes out of the machine and put them wherever they please. Probably, on top of the not so clean machine. To avoid this, anytime you use the machines, set a timer on your phone so you can take your clothes out on time. It’s a win-win situation.

Tip No 4: Buy a basket for your toiletries
As I mentioned before, you have to share everything, even the shower. There is a shower room at the end of the hall with 4 showers on it. Don’t worry, each shower has its own door, no one will be looking at you. However, you will have to carry your belongings from your room to the shower, and we girls use a lot of products! So buy a plastic basket to put your shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and so on, it would make your life easier.

Ok now the facts. The most important thing in order to live at the dorms or in another country in general, is being open minded and tolerant. Just as you might think that some of their attitudes are strange, they’re probably thinking the same about you.

  • There will be noise. A lot of it. Doors slamming, girls laughing, etc. This most of the time will be at night. You will get used to it and will be able to sleep with it. Probably later on you will be part of it with the movie nights that I mentioned before.
  • There are 4 toilets per hall. One “regular” one and three “Taiwanese” style. They will get nasty, especially on Sundays when the cleaning lady doesn’t come. Some girls forget to flush the toilets and you might find ugly surprises. You just have to deal with it.
  • There are dispensing machines on the first and fourth floors. They are really great when you’re hungry late at night or when you run out of milk. Here you can find instant noodles, cookies, doritos, juices and milk.
  • Taiwan is very tolerant about girl-girl relationships. So don’t be surprised if you find two girls hanging out late at night at the common area.

I think I have scared you a little bit. But don’t worry. Overall, Dorm 9 is the most convenient one. It is literally 5 minutes away from the Commerce Building which is where you will be receiving all of your classes. Next to the Commerce Building is the Yi Xian Building, that’s where Frank’s office is. You’re close to pretty much everything. When it is really cold or it’s raining like crazy, that’s when you will say thank God I live down the hill. Besides, it’s fully covered by the scholarship.

Welcome again and remember, being open minded and tolerant is the key!

Xaviera Aguilar
